The Conference Board (CB) Consumer Sentiment
What You Should Know & Might Be Missing

from The Distilled Perspective,
of Patrick T Bulger, Capital Management & Analytics

Source: The Conference Board (CB)
CB Consumer Sentiment was released today.
It is intended to be a measurement of consumer health.

Let's take a closer look:

•    Given, The Numbers:

Last month's 93.1 number was revised to 90.6,
Our current number of 91.2 was reported today.

•    The Bigger Picture:

CB Consumer Sentiment peaked in 2018 around 138 and
Has steadily declined in a choppy downward trend now in it's 8th year.

•    The Reality:

I'm Not Hearing that these numbers are similar to those
Going into 2020 covid area and
Early 2008.

•    Conclusion:

From this view, it does not appear as a change in trend.
I see, Trend decline, level concerning, narrative spin & problematic.

Your Engagement:

1) Your Opinion, share your thoughts with me please:
How would anyone (media/other) viewing the 20 year data interpret this as good?
When it's Your Money, Real Matters.

2) Then, glance at the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Numbers,
Then, pull the chart back to 1980. Is that the lowest decile?
My take: Yikes.  That nearly 50 years.

3) Regarding the Cheering Reporting: Would you call it, reliable, competent or trustworthy?
